One of the best things about cast iron is how simple it is to care for. With just a few easy habits, your Lodge cast iron will last for generations — and actually get better the more you use it.

Here’s everything you need to know about cleaning, seasoning, and troubleshooting your cast iron.

What Is Seasoning?

Seasoning is simply oil baked onto the pan through a process called polymerization. When oil is heated in cast iron at a high enough temperature, it transforms from a wet liquid into a slick, hardened surface that is molecularly bonded to the iron.

This layer gives cast iron a natural, easy-release finish that gets better with every use. Lodge uses 100% vegetable oil to season their cookware right in the foundry, so every piece arrives ready to use.

How to Clean Seasoned Cast Iron: 3 Simple Steps

Cleaning cast iron is incredibly simple — just wash, dry, and rub with oil.

Step 1: Wash

Start with warm, soapy water and scrub with a stiff-bristled brush or scrubbing pad.

Can you use soap? Yes! Modern dish soap is no longer strong enough to remove seasoning from cast iron and is an easy way to prevent buildup. Lodge confirms that their seasoning is durable and can withstand a little soap, water, and a good scrubbing.

Step 2: Dry

Dry completely with a paper towel or lint-free cloth. Never let your cast iron air dry — moisture leads to rust.

Step 3: Rub with Oil

While the pan is still warm, rub a very thin layer of cooking oil over the entire cooking surface — inside and out. Use just enough to coat, not enough to drip or run.

Dealing with Stuck-On Food

Don’t soak your pan! Soaking cast iron in water is a recipe for rust.

Instead:

  • Use a nylon scrubbing brush or pan scraper to remove food residue under warm water

  • For stubborn bits, simmer a small amount of water in the pan for a few minutes to loosen debris, then scrub

  • Use coarse salt as a gentle abrasive — sprinkle it in the pan and scrub with a paper towel or cloth

How to Remove Rust

Rust happens — it’s normal and easy to fix. If your pan develops rust:

  1. Scour – Use a Lodge Rust Eraser or fine steel wool to scrub off the rust in warm, soapy water

  2. Wash and dry – Rinse and dry completely

  3. Oil – Apply a very thin layer of cooking oil

  4. Reseason – If needed, follow the reseasoning steps below

To prevent rust from returning, always dry your pan immediately after washing and rub with a light coat of oil.

When and How to Reseason

All Lodge cookware comes seasoned and ready to use. You also build seasoning every time you cook. But occasionally, you may need to reseason your pan — for example, if the seasoning has flaked off or the pan has developed rust.

How to reseason in the oven:

  1. Wash – Wash the pan with warm, soapy water and dry completely

  2. Oil – Apply a very thin, even layer of cooking oil to the entire surface (inside and out)

  3. Bake – Preheat oven to 450–500°F. Place the cookware upside down on the center rack, with foil on the rack below to catch drips. Bake for 1 hour

  4. Cool – Turn off the heat and allow the pan to cool in the oven

The Best Way to Maintain Seasoning? Just Keep Cooking!

The best — and easiest — way to maintain your cast iron is simply to use it regularly.

Every time you cook with oil or fat, you’re adding another layer of seasoning to the pan. Those initial layers may look patchy or uneven — that’s completely normal. Just keep cooking. Over time, those layers will build up into a strong, nonstick cooking surface.

What Not to Do

❌ Avoid ✅ Instead
Dishwasher Hand wash only — the dishwasher will remove seasoning and cause rust
Soaking in water Rinse and scrub right away
Air drying Dry immediately with a towel
Extreme temperature changes Let the pan cool before washing — thermal shock can crack cast iron

Quick Recap

Three simple rules for a lifetime of great cooking:

  1. Wash with warm, soapy water

  2. Dry completely and immediately

  3. Oil with a thin layer after each use

That’s it. Your Lodge cast iron will reward you with increasingly better performance, meal after meal — and become a true heirloom you can pass down to the next generation.
